1. Current Surf and CDIP 209 Four-Part Breakdown
- Very short-period energy: The CDIP Station 209 nine-band data are centered mainly in the shorter-period bands, indicating locally generated wind-wave energy rather than a dominant long-period swell.
- Short-period swell: The 6 to 10 second range is the most useful portion of the Station 209 signal for today's surf estimate, with wave energy generally arriving from the south to southeast.
- Longer-period swell: There is less energy in the longer-period bands, so a strong groundswell is not currently indicated.
- Overall Ditch Plains estimate: About 2 to 3 feet at exposed breaks, roughly waist to chest high on the average adult surfer, with occasional larger sets possible.
A nearby NOAA buoy report from Station 44097 showed about 3.3 feet significant wave height, a 1.0-foot southeast swell at 12.5 seconds, and 3.0 feet of shorter-period wind waves from the south-southeast. NOAA Station 44017 is currently unavailable, having been recovered in 2023.
2. Current Weather
Montauk is near 73°F under mostly clear conditions. NOAA forecasts a sunny Monday with a high near 80°F. Southwest winds should increase from about 6 to 11 mph through the day. Water temperature at the NOAA Montauk station is about 72°F.

Near Montauk Harbor, low tide is around 1:28 AM at 0.39 feet, high tide around 7:20 AM at 1.70 feet, low tide around 1:30 PM at 0.54 feet, and high tide around 7:26 PM at 2.14 feet.
4. Later Today and Tomorrow
Surf should remain around 2 to 3 feet today, with the southeast swell mixed with shorter-period south-southeast wind waves. The southwest wind may add texture during the afternoon. Tuesday should be sunny with a high near 78°F and southwest winds around 9 to 11 mph. Expect generally modest surf unless additional swell energy develops.
